The Zanzibar Peling clove variety was proposed by the Department of Agriculture of the Banggai Islands Regency in collaboration with the ISMCRI. Dr. Ir. Nurliani Bermawie as the head of the proposing team of clove, stated that the PIT Zanzibar Peling from Ponding-ponding Village has potential production for clove flower. Meanwhile the Banggai Islands cloves have potential of producing dry flowers higher than the superior varieties that have been released, which reached 198.51 kg of fresh flowers or equivalent to 66.17 ± 3.80 kg of dried flowers per tree per year, equivalent to an average productivity of 4 ,6 t/ha of dried flowers (population 100 plants, with correction factor of 70 %). The flower size is larger than the Zanzibar clove 0.40 ± 0.05 g. The essential oil content is quite high 15.08 ± 3.03%. True eugenol content was 75.26 ± 6.42% higher than the industry standard (min 70%), ß -caryophyllen content is 11.28 ± 3.06%, humulene 1.25 ± 0.31 % and eugenil acetate 6.13 ± 3.73%.

Indonesian Spice and Medicinal Crops Research Institute also proposed two vanilla clones resistant to stem rot disease (BBV). These two clones are the result of research that has been started from 1994 to 2021. Dra. Endang Hadipoentyanti, M.S. as the head of the proposing team stated that in addition to BBV resistant, these two varieties also have other advantages namely pod fresh production, dry pods production and high levels of vanillin. The P35 clone was resulted from crossing between accession V2 with V1. This clone had fresh pod production about 4.79 tons/ha/year, dry pod production of 1.72 tons/ha/year and vanillin content of 2.87%. The M25 clone was derived from the mutation induction of the V2 accession. This clone had fresh pod production of 4.66 tons/ha/year, dry pod production of 1.59 tons/ha/year and vanillin content of 3.12% (3.12%-3.13%). These two clones also had distinguishing characteristics, namely the position on the stem/vine, flower size and fruit shape. These two clones can be planted in lowland, medium, and highland areas (50 – 900 m asl).

The results of the Plantation Plant Variety Release meeting, decided that 15 PIT of Zanzibar Peling cloves were approved to be released under the name Zanzibar Peling. Meanwhile, two vanilla clones were approved for release, namely Hivania Agribun (clone P35) and Sovania Agribun (Clon M25). Congratulations to the ISMCRI Clove and Vanilla Proposing Team. Hopefully the varieties produced can be useful for farmers and contribute to advancing Indonesian agriculture. (Tias/ISMCRI)
